“What does it take to win an Ugly Window Contest?” When Wooden Window decided to run the “Ugliest Window” competition, Bill Essert, CEO and President of the company didn’t know what to expect. “People
were surprised as to whether they would actually get a new custom
craftsman wood window to replace an ugly one”. Bill stated.
“We’re glad that everyone has had fun with the competition, but we are also trying to highlight the value of preservation and restoration of the unique original windows” commented Chris Reilly, the Marketing Specialist for the event. Wooden Window just celebrated its’ 25th year in business, but had never done anything like this. Quite a bit of our business is through referrals from previous clients. We thought it would be a great way to show what a difference a window can make to the overall look of the home. Bill and Chris both knew that the people involved would have to be the experts in design, preservation and construction. The competition got just that in the form of the panel of judges. When the Executive Directors of the California Preservation Foundation and Oakland Heritage Alliance along with Paul Winans of Winans Construction came aboard, things really took off. Next up were Buzz Leer of HGTV’s House Detective and Alice Carey of Carey & Company Architectural firm in San Francisco. The talent, resources and expertise these judges brought to the table were critical in giving the competition credibility. “When
reviewing the entries, the windows that made the most impact
on the overall architectural intent of the building were the favorites of the judges”. Bill states as he watches the craftsmen in the production shop finish another window to restore a Victorian home in San Francisco. “There is no shortage of ugly windows throughout the Bay Area, including the installation of untold aluminum sliders in the 50’s and 60’s to more recent additions like the vinyl windows that look out of place in most period homes” Request a Free Quote | Architects & Contractors | Links | Newsletter | Home Contractor's License #640153 Association of General Contractors NARI - Nat.
