For 218 years, the San Francisco Presidio served as an army post for three nations. With 1480 acres and more than 500 historic buildings, the Presidio became a part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area in 1994. The Walt Disney Family Museum, a 19,000 square foot, $110 million museum complex transformed an army barrack (Building 104) and two neighboring buildings on the Presidio Parade Ground into a visually stunning telling of the story of Disney’s life and work. The museum occupies the one barrack where the inside was bare, stripped for structural work in 1995. Even so, the construction budget was $52 million for the project, which includes two buildings to the north (one converted a gymnasium into offices, the other ingeniously tucked the museum’s mechanical systems into a machine gun shed). Wooden Window’s responsibility included replacing damaged and missing windows and doors with historically accurate replacements that perfectly matched the originals incorporating soundproof glass. The project required close attention to detail to ensure an exact match, using museum quality glass, in an award winning historic restoration and adaptive reuse.
